Charity is not Enough!

It is quite easy to live life by ignoring problems around you which are not directly related to you. However, it is not the best way tolive. Indeed it is very insensitive way to live your life. By closing your eyes, reality will not change. Quantum physics does not work at this level.

I am talking about poor and underprivileged peoples. There is no end to their suffering. Every winter people die because of extreme cold as they do not have shelter and woollen cloth to keep them warm. In summer they die because of extreme hot temperature. In between they die because of hunger, malnutrition and due to non-availability of medicine and healthcare.

All this happens around us. We read in newspapers, watch inTV and sometimes saw from our own eyes. But instead of doing something, we gossip about it and move on! As if someone else has to do something for them. Manypeople hold government responsible as if someone else elected government forthem. In democracy, it is responsibility of every citizen to be politicallyactive and caste vote to right candidate. Blaming government is futile. As blame come back to us.

It is not that no one is doing anything for them, there are many NGO’s doing remarkable work to help needy people. The main problem is at individual level. We have time for everything except to help someone to live life better. You might consider yourself nice person because you regularly give charity. But did you ever enquire whether your charity is reaching to right hand or it is consumed before by others?  According to one Hindustan Times report:

“The Delhi high court has called for toughening of licensing norms for NGOs observing that 99% of them are “fraud” and “merely money making devices”.

In such scenario, giving charity is not enough. On contrary, it may happen that your charity is being used for wrong purposes. The best way out is to check personally where your money is going or find needy people around you and help them in whatever way you can. Your little time and effort can bring huge change in someone’s life.

Charity is not the only way to help. Sometimes your kind words, a smile and little time can make bigger impact then money. It is not always the poor who need help, sometimes well to do peoples stuck in such situation that they are on mercy of poor peoples. Surprisingly, they never let you down. Thus, do not think yourself superior and other inferior if you are helping them. We all are human and we all are equal. It is our responsibility to help those who left behind because of various reasons. Love all, help others and hate none.

Disproportionate distribution of money

With the advancement in technology and increasing literate population it is becoming very difficult for illiterate people to survive in such world. Without any technical skill, no one can find the good job. Even in agriculture new machines and high-tech equipment are required and being used to increase productivity.

Gap between rich and poor is more dangerous than Global warming: For rich people it is easier to give education to their kids or even if they didn’t complete education, their rich dad can arrange source of income for them. But for poor kids, there is only darkness! They do not know how they can finish education without money and even after finishing education if their grades are little less, whether they will get good job or not! They have to suffer for under under-qualified job.

We are living in a world where rich are becoming richer and poor are becoming poorer. On top of that, robots and artificial intelligence is reducing jobs. This scenario needs to be change. This is not the future we want for our coming generation. We need to find a mechanism to distribute wealth equally. There are two things we can do. First is for those employees who lost jobs due to automation must be compensated by providing some kind of pension from the profit company is earning by using automatic machines and AI. Second thing which can be done is by limiting maximum wealth a person can leave as legacy to hairs. We all earn everything from this world and from people living on it. Why should legacy be transferred to few people? It belongs to people from whom (S)he earns it. This rule must be implemented on billionaires. All excess money above the prescribed limit must go to charity or to government for welfare of poor family. This way we can reduce disproportionate distribution of money and live in better world.

Help poor’s to earn livelihood

We help beggars, sometimes because of their condition and sometimes because they irritate us by begging for long time. But when a poor person tries to earn money by hard work-we never help him. Instead we try to gain from his situation. For example: suppose there is a poor man trying to sell vegetables door to door. We will bargain from him and then we will ask Dhanya* in free.

We need to change our attitude. Let us help new starts up where people’s are putting sweat and blood to make it successful. Let us stop bargaining from poor wayfarer, cobblers, rickshaw-puller, maids and others doing similar works. Be generous towards them and soon you will find beggars around you are reducing. If by begging a beggar is earning suppose Rs 100 a day, and by working hard a labor is earning Rs.90 then ultimately people will be more inclined towards begging which requires less hard work.  The valve of 10 rupees for a poor person is 10 times greater than for rich person.

Sit and think for few minutes: who deserve your money more? A beggar who is begging without any obvious reasons or a person working hard and yet is not getting enough money to eat two times. But still he is not begging because he has self-esteemed .

Many Muslims gives Zakat (Charity), I think that instead of distributing your zakat in many persons, give it to one person. So that he /she can utilize it for some meaningful purpose. Moreover you can also give him some good practical advice based on your experience and help him in starting new small business. Based on profit-sharing you can invest some of your money in his business and boost his business.  Your primary goal will remain helping him but at the same time you can earn some money.

Many people have ideas and skill to earn money but have no money to start their work.  They are not so much educated that they can get loan from bank. Some people use their condition and give them money on very high interest. Due to lack of experience they hardly succeed in first attempt and spent whole life in returning interest. If you have money and you find someone doing small business like repairing tire puncher, selling door to door some small items etc. Go to him talk about him. Tell him about your investment plan. Make personal friendly relation with him. Ask if he has any idea how to grow business or give him your idea. Assure him that you really want to help him because of his condition. Motivate him to send his child to school. Help him in filling forms and other formalities. Don’t inverts huge amount of money. Just that much which you can let goes if everything fails. Business is a risky thing. Trust no one with your money. Do not hand over whole money in one time. Make a plan with him and issue money in installments. Make a verbal agreement about profit-sharing. Don’t be too greedy though. Be focus on your purpose of helping. Give him full freedom to do his work.

Since you helped him, which is very rare thing now a day, he will not cheat you most probably. Also, he knew that you may help him second time so it is not good idea to cheat you. Even if he will not return you anything, his success will be your reward.

By investing just Rs 50,000 a year, you can change many lives and might generate a secondary income. But the most important thing which you will earn will be happiness and satisfaction.
